An international academic research project dedicated to calculating the precise geographic centers of every sovereign nation on Earth โ developed over 2+ years by 66 specialists from 28 countries.
The Middle of Countries project was conceived in 2022 as a response to the lack of a standardised, scientifically rigorous, and publicly accessible database of geographic centroids for the world's sovereign nations. Existing resources were either outdated, methodologically inconsistent, or limited in scope.
Our interdisciplinary team โ comprising geodesists, cartographers, GIS engineers, computational geometers, and software architects โ set out to build the most accurate and comprehensive geographic center database ever assembled. Every calculation is performed on the WGS84 ellipsoid using the Area-Weighted Centroid algorithm, processing tens of thousands of boundary coordinate points per country.
The project is designed for educational institutions, researchers, journalists, developers, and curious minds worldwide. All data is freely accessible under an open academic license, with attribution required for academic use and permission required for commercial applications.
After more than two years of rigorous research, peer review, and iterative refinement, we are proud to present the most comprehensive and scientifically validated geographic centroid database available to the public. This project was developed entirely for educational and scientific purposes.
Our international team has designed and developed this project by leveraging expertise, innovative ideas, and advanced techniques from the fields of geodesy, cartography, GIS (Geographic Information Systems), computational geometry, and software engineering, and it continues to be refined and enhanced.
